How do you handle friends and family constantly asking "Are you allowed to eat that?" It makes me so self-conscious and frustrated during meals!

Dealing with the "diabetes police" is a universal rite of passage in this community! Having someone scrutinize your plate or question your food choices is incredibly frustrating, especially when their comments are based on the outdated myth that people with diabetes can never eat a single carbohydrate or grain of sugar.
Most of the time, family and friends mean well. They care about you, but they are operating on misinformation and don't realize how exhausting their constant monitoring is. The best way to handle it is to establish firm but polite boundaries, combined with a quick drop of education.
You might try having a standard, go-to response prepared that shuts down the conversation without starting a fight. For example: "I appreciate you looking out for me, but my doctor and I have a great plan for my diet, and I know how to manage this." Or, even simpler: "Yes, I can eat this! I just have to manage my medication for it."
If a specific person continually crosses the line after you've politely asked them to stop, it is perfectly okay to be more direct. Let them know that while you value their support, commenting on your food actually causes you more anxiety, which isn't good for your blood sugar either. Remember, you do not owe anyone a public defense of what is on your fork. You are the expert on your own daily management!
