Having a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) fall off early is incredibly frustrating, especially since replacing them can be expensive! The adhesive that comes on the sensor from the factory isn't always strong enough to withstand heavy sweating, swimming, or humid weather.
Fortunately, the diabetes community has perfected the art of sensor adhesion. The secret is layering. First, preparation is key: thoroughly wash the site with basic soap (avoid moisturizing body washes) and use an alcohol swab to remove any remaining skin oils. Let it dry completely.
Next, many people use a liquid adhesive barrier, such as Skin-Tac. You wipe this on the skin, let it become slightly tacky, and then fire the sensor right through it. This creates a much stronger bond than the sensor adhesive alone.
Finally, if the edges still start to lift a few days in, use an "overpatch." These are specialized, medical-grade tape patches shaped specifically to fit over your brand of CGM. You can find them online in dozens of colors and patterns. If your sensor ever starts to peel, do not peel it the rest of the way off—just slap an overpatch on top of it to lock it down for the remainder of the session!
